I am a collector buying and selling Civil War artifacts. I am an archaeologist and antrhopologist by experience and education respectively. I am interested in the preservation of cultural material from all eras before present. All of my items are guarenteed authentic for life, excavated items were recovered from private property with permission, this includes construction sites here in Virginia.
The frame buckle featured on the home page with my banner was found by me last fall. My Uncle, long time relic hunter Ron was throwing a belt axe into a rotten oak tree. He let me put in one throw, then kept hogging the hatchet. I began picking up sticks and putting them onto a small brush pile at the end of my driveway. I noticed a piece of metal washed out at the base of a decent size oak. At first glance I thought it was a piece of an old clock. When I got up up close I noticed it was a frame buckle. We had a hurricane come through with lots of rain. The rain completely rinsed out the buckle. I found it as you see it on my banner. The buckle was discarded in a roadbed during the war. The road was likely used until the 40's, but there it remained until the oak pushed it out of the ground. There are several cut marks on the brass, the fork tongue is no longer there. My uncle was less than pleased, but he learned not to hog the hatchet!
